Filtering and Monitoring
Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 requires schools in England to “ensure appropriate filters and appropriate monitoring systems are in place” and they “should be doing all that they reasonably can to limit children’s exposure to risks from the school’s IT system.” What's more, Whitemoor Academy has a duty to provide a safe learning environment, which includes protecting our pupils from harmful content online.
 

What is Filtering and Monitoring?
Filtering means blocking harmful internet sites and inappropriate content.

Our filtering system limits access to harmful sites and inappropriate content without stopping pupils from recognising their responsibility in keeping themselves and others safe, and without negatively impacting our teaching and learning provision.

Monitoring is the procedures and protocols employed to ensure that there is a robust approach to checking that our systems are effective and that we respond swiftly to incidents of concern.

The Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) are responsible for monitoring and responding to any incidents raised by Smoothwall and acting appropriately. The DSLs are trained in how to respond to monitoring concerns, should the need arise.

To support with the above, we use the Etke (formally eSafety4Schools) web filtering solution and Smoothwall monitoring system. All data captured by Etke and Smoothwall is managed in compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018. 

Referrals

The Nottingham City Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (City MASH) receives referrals in respect of children where there are worries about their welfare.

• City MASH is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:50pm.
• Outside these hours, the telephone number should be used for emergency safeguarding enquiries only.
• The City MASH will only accept referrals on a child that lives within the Nottingham City boundaries.
