Writing lesson 1

Your task is to write an adventure story using one of the characters from the Borrowers in an alternative setting.  Today you are going to plan your adventure story and begin writing.  For your plan you need to

  • Decide which character you want to write about – Pod, Arrietty or Homily Clock
  • Choose your setting.  Before doing this think about which setting would give you lots of things your character might want to ‘borrow’ from the Human Beans.
  • Think about what your character will ‘borrow’ and the problems/challenges the character might face to get it.
  • Decide what happens.  Is your character seen?  Who by?  Are they friendly or do they try to hurt/capture your character?  If captured how does your character escape?
  • Think about where you are going to include some dialogue between two characters.
  • Try to include lots of adjectives (to describe your character and the setting), fronted adverbials and prepositional phrases in your plan as this will help when you begin writing.

Then if you have time you can begin your story.

Maths: White Rose Maths - Open the video links file and click on Lesson 4, watch the video and then click on the lesson 4 activity sheet. See activity sheet below - (You don’t need to print the worksheet off, completing it on paper is fine!)

If you started writing yesterday then re-read what you have already written before continuing.

Complete your story remembering to

  • Describe the appearance and personality of your character.
  • Describe the setting
  • Include a problem and how your character overcomes this.
  • Include correctly punctuated dialogue

When you have finished read it to check it makes sense and is correctly punctuated and has no spelling mistakes.  Then check that you have included

  • Fronted adverbials
  • Prepositional phrases
  • Dialogue
  • Figurative language

Maths: see Friday maths problem sheet below

Other: draw a picture of all the members of your family.  Add adjectives to describe their physical appearance and their personality.
