Writing lesson 1

Tomorrow you are going to write a story about a superhero.  Today you are going to plan a character description for your superhero.  Include as much detail as possible to help you with your story tomorrow.  Remember to include

  • The name of your superhero and their mission
  • A description of their costume.  Is it hidden under normal clothing or always visible?
  • A description of their superpower and any special equipment they have
  • Who is their nemesis (enemy)?
  • Do they have a weakness that their nemesis could use against them?
  • Who are they going to help in the story?  How do they do this?

Remember to include lots of adjectives and expanded noun phrases ready to use when writing your story.

Writing lesson 2

Today you are going to write the story about your superhero

Paragraph 1: the introduction.  Describe your superhero.  What are they doing at the beginning of the story?

Paragraph 2: how do they find out someone needs their help?   What can your superhero do to help?

Paragraph 3: the nemesis appears, who is it and what do they look like?  How do they try to stop/harm your superhero?  What does your superhero do to defeat them?

Paragraph 4: the ending.  What happens?

When you have finished read your story to check it makes sense, is correctly punctuated and has no spelling mistakes.  Then edit to improve.  Make sure you have included

  • A range of adjectives and expanded noun phrases
  • Fronted adverbials
  • A variety of co-ordinating and sub-ordinating conjunctions
  • Apostrophes for possession
  • Commas in a list

Writing lesson 1

Today you are going to plan and begin writing a non-chronological report about an imaginary hybrid animal (a mix of 2 animals).  First write the plan.

Paragraph 1: Introduction – note down some general information about your creature.  Is it common or endangered?  Is it easy to find?  Is it well known?

Paragraph 2: Appearance – what does your animal look like?  What size is it?  What colour is it?  Does it have fur, feathers, scales?  Can it fly, run fast, climb or swim?  Is it easily camouflaged?

Paragraph 3: Diet – what does your creature eat?  Is it a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore?  How does it get its food?  How often does it need to eat?  Does it prefer to find its food/eat alone or in a group?

Paragraph 4: Habitat – where in the world does it live?  What sort of climate does it need to survive?  Does it live on or under the ground, up high, in caves, under water?  Does it have a specific ‘den/nest’ or can it live anywhere?   Does it live alone or with other animals?  Does it stay in one place or ‘migrate’ when the weather changes?

 

When you have finished your plan, it is time to begin writing the introductory paragraph.  Remember to include

  • A main title
  • A sub heading
  • Technical vocabulary
  • Adjectives and expanded noun phrases
  • Conjunctions
  • Adverbs

 

  • Art: create a picture showing your hybrid creature in its habitat using crayons, paint, collage or any materials you have at home.

Writing lesson 2

Use your plan to continue writing paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 of your non-chronological report.  When you have finished check it to ensure it makes sense, is punctuated correctly and has no spelling mistakes.  Then check to make sure you have included

  • Sub headings
  • Key facts
  • Technical vocabulary
  • Adjectives and expanded noun phrases
  • Co-ordinating and sub-ordinating conjunctions
  • Sub-ordinate clauses
  • A question
  • Adverbial phrases

Add a glossary to explain any technical words you have used eg herbivore

Writing lesson 1: 

Today you are going to create a plan ready to write a description of a workshop.  See photo sheet below if you need ideas.  See workshop photos below to help you.

Paragraph 1 – description of when you first enter the workshop.  What can you see, hear, touch, smell?

Paragraph 2 – describe the machines.  How big are they? What are they made of?  What do they feel like?  What do they sound like?

Paragraph 3 – describe the robot.  Size, shape, features.  What happens when it does not work?

Remember to include on your plans

  • Lots of adjectives
  • Verbs and adverbs
  • Fronted adverbial phrases
  • A range of prepositions
  • Examples of apostrophes showing possession

Writing a letter lesson 1

You are a crayon writing a letter to Duncan threatening to quit

  • Write your plan.  Remember to include
    • Which colour crayon you are
    • Why you are writing.  What is the problem?
    • What you like to colour eg. if you are the blue crayon this might be the sea or sky
    • Your reason for wanting to quit
    • What emotions you are feeling
    • What Duncan can do to solve the problem and make you stay
  • Plan the structure of the letter – address, greeting, sign off
  • Write the first draft of the letter

Start with the plan.

  • Who is your superhero and what is their special power?
  • Think about who is in danger.  What is the danger?
  • Where are they?
  • Will your superhero need a change of costume or a piece of equipment?
  • What happens as he/she tries to help?
  • Does another character arrive to help?

Then you can start to write your adventure story.

  • Art: draw your superhero.  Label the special features of their costume and what they can do.
